Who they are Relative to Each Other

A Coquettish Smile by Gustave Jean Jacquet

"…But I have in me a will that defies loss and so my tragedy." This from Margaret Bissett the Countess Tierney, sister to the hero of my second novel Leeds. Margaret is responsible for unspeakable acts of cruelty the least of which is the death of her uncle who suffered heart failure because of her ruthless interrogation.

Now, here is my predicament. I love Margaret so very much, I agonize over her story and she badgers me constantly to get it done. I don’t know if I have enough material to write a full novel for Margaret and her long-suffering husband David who has loved her to his own detriment.

The two share a home, guilt for a shared sin and a passion that can’t be denied but they are coming undone because neither is able to forgive himself or herself or the other for that matter. They are for the most part pretty well-established characters who have been mentioned in three of my four novels thus far so I can’t deviate too much from their core.

That and I don’t want to retell too much of what was already said in the other novels so now I’m writing up a board of who they are relative to each other with the hopes it will give me an in to a workable story.

Take my care when you go and have a lovely week,
Simone

  1. She sounds fascinating. I think a secondary character becoming primary in a third or fourth novel in a series is a great idea. I'm sure you can make it work.

A while ago you were posting query letters. Did you send them off? How is the response? Any takers?

  4. I'm sure much more of their sordid life will become clear once you zero in on them. A gambling problem perhaps? Can't wait to find out what you come up with.

  5. She sounds like a very interesting woman, though a touch sinister too.

  8. Sounds like an interesting character. I'm sure you could "throw something" (attack, disability, illness, fraud...) at her and see where she goes with it :)

  9. Perhaps start with a short story, and let it grow as it will? Or if it doesn't, then at least you'll have a short story or novella out of them. Best of luck in your explorations of these two... :-)

  10. I'm hoping they will stand up and tell you what they would like for you to do with them. Characters can be helpful like that sometimes!

  11. I personally love a romance between married characters, particularly tortured ones. I'm sure you will think of just the right story for them.

    I look forward to it!

    Happy New Year, Simone.

  13. You've all been very kind which makes me feel a right eel for all I have on the page after an entire day is 'Storyboard for Margaret and Tierney.' Pathetic, yes I see that but the words fail me. I'm hoping a little sleep will do me good.
Michele, sadly I'm still waiting to hear back but I'm optimistic it will be good new. Silly perhaps but it's how I feel.
...And Vicky my every thanks for the award. I'll write a post about it in a week or so.
    My love, my gratitude,
    Simone.
